On my ROM 1 I use 3 AAA batteries in series using the alligator clips trick - I've been using this for about 5 years with no problems.
You can pickup replacement ROM 3 batteries from most good electronics stores. Here is Aus Jaycar have them. They are known as 1/2 can 3.6V lead-less batteries (i.e. the batteries without the wires on each end).
