I think I've figured it out.  I had a friend of mine look through the
code and he discovered that for some reason the crack is looking at
slot 4 and if something is in there it will lock up and crash.  The
only thing he can think of is that the cracker was trying to hide and
obfuscate his code by making it do unnecessary things like check the
slots and such.  He removed the unnecessary code and everything works
just fine now.

 I guess this would explain why it worked on my IIe back in the day
and doesn't work on the same IIe now. I have a lot more cards than I
had back then, including one in slot 4.  Mystery solved!
