Sony digital photo conversion for AW 5.1 use

Jason, I have been trying to convert photos from my sony digital camera into
a format i can use with my Apple IIgs for  use in Appleworks 5.1.  My
ultimate goal is to insert a  B & W picture of an animal in the upper right
corner of a  Spreadsheet receipt (or WP via clipboard) .  I can convert the
.jpg file with Graphics Convertor on my powerbook G3 into a GIF file. ( can
also do that with Superconvert 4.0, but a little clearer with Graphics
convertor.)  I then used your utility IIGIF to convert to DHR, which I can
import into AW  5.1 via SuperFonts

The problem is the resulting quality -  it is really poor.  I think if I
could use SHR somehow, the acceptable quality might be there, but is there a
way to import or use SHR within appleworks??

Is there asome other way or program to accomplish what I am trying to do?
