Do you have slot 7 set to "Your card" in the control panel?

The 607-0291-C number is the hardware revision number of the board,
which isn't relevant. (I'm not aware of any compatibility issues with
different hardware revisions, or even if there are any different
hardware revisions.)
Any mention of "revision C" of the original Apple SCSI Card is in
reference to the version of the firmware (EPROM) installed in the card.
The older firmware versions (A and B) were missing features and had bugs
(in comparison to revision C), so GS/OS refuses to work with them.
Strictly speaking, Apple was just being bloody minded and using GS/OS to
force upgrades of the old firmware versions. Once GS/OS has loaded its
drivers from disk, it doesn't use the firmware on the card any more.

Do you have a complete set of system disks for IIgs System 6.0.1? The
minimal set is three disks (Install, SystemTools1 and SystemToosl2),
with some extra software included on the Fonts and synthLab disks.
There is also a bootable system disk, and a Mac-specific disk which is
used to update the Apple II support for an AppleShare 3.0 server.

Correct. Both AppleWorks and AppleWorks GS were commercial
applications. They were never legally available as a free download.

I used the 8-bit version of AppleWorks as my primary word processor. I
occasionally used AppleWorks GS as well. Another good word processor
was GraphicWriter III.
