If you recount the chips you'll find the card has 4 banks of eight 256k RAM
chips
for 1m of RAM. The 4 sockets are for EPROMs or EEPROMS. It came with
special software to erase and reprogram the EEPROMs on the card.
Unfortunately I can't recall for sure which sizes it took. I think it was up to
64k
EPROMs but it's been years since I've seen one and I never had one myself.
