Re: Marinetti over LocalTalk/Appletalk?
>Does Marinetti support MacIP now?
Some years back, at a K Fest there was a demonstration of Marinetti over
Localtalk. It worked, but, it had some serious and not ready for prime time
bugs. Since the Marinetti Project is in full swing on Source Forge, we can
hope for a miracle some day soon.
As to LocalTalk Bridge and TCP/IP: I have LT Bridge running on a Quadra 950
under System 7.5.3. On that LT leg my net has 2 Apple IIGSs, 2 //e(s) on
Network cards, the LT port on a Laserwriter IIg, and a IWII Localtalk card. Oh
and on occasion a Appletalked IWLQ; I need the power cord for another use so
its only on when I need it ;)
I can do all the usual Appletalk things and I can get to other etherneted
resources from the IIgs, can login to another ether connected Mac (on
Appleshare 3.0.3)from a //e (or a //e card on a LC Mac) but I can NOT do
TCP/IP. I have read, and I forget where, that LT Bridge eats TCP packets.
Hungry begger it be....
Now as to Marinetti, I do know that a standard Marinetti install using a
LANceGS card (which is a Marinetti aware TCP/IP only drivers Network Card for
the Apple II) and the "Routing Driver" which was designed to get one out of
the local subnet, you can do all you need of a TCP nature such as use Arachnid
to surf the web, use Samurai to chat on IRC, access telnet via Spectrum or
Kim Howe's Telnet NDA, or do stuff with many other products out or soon
comming out.
But, either the Lance or Marinetti itself....eats pings. Don't know why,
just know it is.
I describe all this and other woes of the retro networker in some detail in
my weird, but I hope readable article on networking which can be found at
