If a 5.25" disk does not have a "write enable" notch on the side, it
usually means that it was intended to be a master or backup copy
of the software, and never written to. First copy the disk to a blank
diskette and then boot and run from the copy. Keep the original in
a safe place in case something bad happens to the working copy.
If the diskette _has_ a notch, and it is not taped over, then your
drive is not sensing it. This is probably a trivial mechanical problem
which can be fixed by careful disassembly and cleaning in the
area where the notch ends up when the disk is inserted.
If it's not a mechanical problem, then the little microswitch may
need to be replaced--a little more trouble than it's worth for most
people, given the typical $5 price of a 5.25" drive--just replace
the drive.
