The Apple IIc+ was the first Apple II model with a built-in accelerator,
(4 MHz) and it was released in 1988.

The Apple IIgs (September 1986) also had control over the machine speed,
allowing it to run at either 2.8 MHz or 1 MHz.

Your wife's IIc might have had an accelerator such as a Zip Chip or
Rocket Chip installed, which would let it run at 4, 5, 8 or 10 MHz
depending on the particular accelerator brand and model.
