Help! 8-bit Chessmaster 2000 patch

Hey all,

Wanting to fix my original Chessmaster 2000 5.25" floppy so it can be
archived (copy protection removed), I went to Asimov and downloaded this
patch:

<ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/images/games/strategy/Chess/chessma
ster_2000.zip>

Basically a folder with an FAQ and two disk images for sides one and two.

The disk images seem to decompress OK on DOS 3.3 formatted floppies, and
Asimov on my GS reports the disks as completing successfully, but when I
run the restored floppy of the game, all I get is mush.

My AppleSoft basic is *very* rusty and I want to have a fairly decent
understanding again before I attempt this on my copy. (pulled out all my
Applesoft books----lotsa dust on 'em)

CopyII+ v 9.0 will allow me to make a working copy of the original to
another 5.25" real floppy, but I want to archive this game and use it under
Bernie on my Mac as a disk image. This can't be done until the copy
protection is removed. Below is the FAQ on how to do it.

NAME: Chessmaster 2000
PUBLISHER: Software ToolWorks
TYPE: Chess Strategy

Cracked from an original by DataWiz/6502 Crew

TECH NOTES:

Chessmaster 2000 was a rather simple crack. Boot the DOS 3.3 system
master. Change memory location $B942 from 38 to 18. This causes dos
3.3 to ignore any I/O errors (in this case modified address/data headers)
and run COPYA. You now have a normalized version of Chessmaster, but
alas, when you boot it up, it crashes. The secondary protection can
be disabled by changing 2 bytes:

Track 0, Sector 1
Change bytes starting at 52 from F0 12
to EA EA

Boot it back up, and get your ass stomped in chess by an
8 BIT program (how humiliating... ;-)

Any expanded steps on the procedure above would be greatly appreciated. I
do have a working DOS 3.3 master to work with.
