For the control panel, you could also try holding down the option key while
you power up.
You might also try the computers self test - either hold down the Open Apple
and option keys while powering up or if already powered up while holding
down the control, option and Open Apple key press and release the reset key.

This is an unusual drive. To read high density disk in 1.4mb as used in the
Mac or PC you need an Apple Superdrive card. Without that card you can
still use high density disks but the drive will use AEs 1.6mb format if you
install the AEHD driver. Keep in mind though that there's no other drive
that'll read that format.
