The manual says some software requires it but I can't recall any
offhand. I generally left it slow because every other slot was full
and I swapped different cards in and out of slot 2. Sometimes
some of them required a slower slot. My communications program
was Proterm which would use the modem port even though the
slot was set to "your card".
