Actually, I personally know the fellow in Intel who did that deal - his
version of the story is that IBM was more interested in the 68K until he
showed that Intel alone could meet the demand for parts. At the time,
Motorola could only provide 68K parts in large sample quantities, nowhere
near enough to supply IBM. Intel was, and still is, very good at making
cookie-cutter high volume foundries.
