If it is an early model Apple ][, it should start up with a screen full of
random characters, and possibly some colored blocks (Lo-res graphics mode
might be turned on). Pressing the RESET key would put an asterisk at the
bottom of the screen, indicating that the computer was in the system
monitor. Later model ]['s had RESET as part of the power-up cycle, so the
computer would start with a screen full of random characters and the
monitor prompt. Pressing CTRL-B and then RETURN would give you the integer
BASIC prompt.
