IIe to PC

I suppose this subject has been worked to death but I was not there
so...

I have a IIE with a couple meg of files on floppy and/or an external
hard drive.

I would love to move these files to my PC and not quite sure how to
do it.

I seem to be able to call my PC on the phone and send files but this
requires running back and forth between two buildings and tying up
two phone lines.

I have seen refs to "null modem cables" and wonder if this is
something that could be used between an Apple and a PC.  I can take
my lap top out the the Apple if this is possible.

Any help?  any other way?
