There are many choices. I like the compact Macs like the SE/30 which has a
slot for an ethernet card and Appletalk ports. It is capable of doing
limited internet activities. The latest Macs don't come with Appletalk
ports, though it may be possible to add them.

The compact Macs are small and have a built-in screen, which is convenient.
More powerful Macs such as ones with 040 or Power PC processors can also be
had cheaply, and I think would work. They have slots for ethernet and serial
ports for Appletalk. They would be a better choice if you want to use the
net more.
You might just check your local computer junk store, and look for a Mac with
an ethernet card. I saw a couple of IIsi's with ethernet at my local
Salvation Army store over the weekend.

You can get your IIgs on the net as it is, if you can find an ISP like mine,
which supports dialup shell access. All you need is a comm program in that
case. To do much more, you'll surely need more than 1 meg of ram. I think
that's enough to boot off a Mac, though. You'll also need Appleshare 2 or 3
running on the Mac, 3 being the best choice.
