The FAQ states that the AppleShare FileServer v2 requires
System 6. This limits your choice of Macintosh computers
to those with a 68030 or earlier, and not all 68030's will
run System 6 (eg. the Colour Classic), so be careful while
shopping around. http://www.lowendmac.com/early-macs.html
may help. A Macintosh Plus can take an ethernet/scsi
bridge, so don't simply shrug these off.
If you don't have a local ISP which provides "shell" access,
then many Macintosh computers with a 68020 or better can
run NetBSD. This will allow you to run lynx or links for
web access; tin for news; and elm, or mutt, or pine for mail.
There is even software to bundle your news and mail into QWK
packets for offline reading. The web, ftp, etc. are also
accessible via email, even if you have to roll your own
solution with lynx. :-) If you are interested in that route,
check http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/ for the supported
machines. Personally, I like the SE/30 as it is a compact
machine which will keep out of the way.
Good luck,
Byron.
