Interesting, since the string:  apple* +ii*  (I forgot the * after
"apple" in the original post) is a superset of "Apple II", including
all items (case insensitive) that have "apple" in them as a prefix
and also contain "ii" as a prefix.  This gets:

Apple II
Apples II+
apple iigs
etc...

Perhaps eBay's search engine has peculiarities.
