It takes a considerable amount of modification (of the power supply and the
computer's case), but it is doable. I have a 250W power supply in my
"stealth GS" (in a IIe case). You'll need to remove the power supply from
its case, drill holes in the IIe baseplate to match the mounting holes for
the power-supply circuit board, mount the power-supply input connector and a
power switch to a metal plate that gets bolted to the back of the case, and
replace the two 6-pin inline connectors that go the motherboard with the 3x2
connector used by the IIe motherboard. You should probably also get rid of
most of the drive-power connectors to reduce clutter (you can leave one
connected as there's just enough room to install a 3.5" hard drive if you're
so inclined). Once all that's done, mount the circuit board on some
standoffs and plug it all in. Since you'll be running the power supply
"open-frame," you'll need to exercise caution when installing the power
supply and when working inside your computer (getting zapped with 170 volts
(the peak voltage that roughly corresponds to 120V RMS) from an input
capacitor will ruin your day. :-)
One possible consideration is that a IIe might not present enough of a load
to keep the power supply running properly; the original supply was only
something like 30-35W. Mine drives a ROM 01 motherboard with an extra 4
megs of RAM, a 12.5-MHz ZipGS, a rev. C RamFAST, and a 340MB hard drive (a
fairly old 3.5" 4300rpm half-height IBM originally built for server use).
