I figured that maybe in extending HFS to HFS+ that they must
have fixed some code that caused the other problems to manifest.

Funny. I have file sharing turned on my Mac and I can eject
disc from my CD-ROM drive. The only time might be if you
were sharing the volume on the CD drive then it will say that
you can't because that drive is being shared. However, if
you turn off file sharing for the drive only, it will unmount
the disk.
