First, just to avoid ambiguity, I do not try to descriminate between
"rpg" and "adventure" designations. My vote goes to Dungeon Master (for Apple
IIgs).
DM is a long-play multi-character D&D maze adventure featuring excellent
puzzles, good character development and an interesting gamescape. The Magic
system is solid, you have a good choice of Weapons, and combat works well.
It's biggee feature is the realistic 3D-forward view backed by very good
sound effects. Movement, combat, etc. happens in real time.
While DM is a lot of fun and seems to deserve the #1 ranking, everything
happens in the maze-- no forests, inns, shops, etc.. I think there are a few
games that I enjoyed playing as much or more ...
The Magic Candle (for 8-bit Apple II's) is a very long play D&D
adventure which takes your party to all sorts of places spread across a
continent. There is good attention to details like resting at inns, schedules
for ships, etc.. Very good Magic system, decent weapons and combat plus good
range for character development. The game features an involved scenario
loaded with interesting mini-quests. If you like being emersed in an
adventure for a few weeks, Magic Candle is your game.
If you like first-rate tactical combats (where you move your guys around
to match-up against enemies, set up barriers, ...) mixed with good
adventuring, go for Champions of Krynn. Like most of the other medium-long
play "Gold Box" AD&D games from SSI, you get very good Magic and Weapons
setups, good character development options, and a fairly involved scenario.
Other great adventures include Dragon Wars (II and IIgs versions),
Bard's Tale (I) for IIgs, Tangled Tales (II), and The Eternal Dagger (II).
You can download 8-bit Apple II games from Asimov and a few other sites.
For IIgs games, good sources are the Apple IIgs Gaming Memory Fairway and
Tarnover. For links to these sites, see the FAQs Game Sites page at
