Problem with AMD is that it doesn't know how to market when it is in
the lead. The last decent AMD advertisements were from the K6-2
introduction (with the 2D lady running from 2D attackers, running into
a room with a K6-2 powered computer then turning 3D). The K6-2
wasn't nearly as good a chip as the Athlon/K7 is relative to Intel's but
AMD's clever marketing established it as Intel's principle competitor
and effectively wiped out Cyrix and IDT.
Then when AMD introduced the K7 (Athlon and then Duron) they DID
have a superior product to Intel. The AMD blew away the Pentium III
in everything including both power and raw clock speed. When AMD
released the 1Ghz Athlon and Intel couldn't match it, AMD should
have used those valuable months to hammer home the message of
its lead in commercials with a campaign at least as big as the one
for the K6-2. Instead what did we get from AMD? Silence. The only
ones advertising the Athlon were the PC makers themselves.
Gateway and Compaq had to advertise their "fastest PCs on Earth
with 1Ghz AMD Athlon Processor."
Contrast this to Intel, with its blue man commercials. Now that it
is back in the lead, it advertises in a very smart way.
Make no mistake, I believe AMD is superior from a technical point
but it has bungled the opportunity to capture more market share
from Intel when AMD was in the lead.
