IIgs serial port, a walk down memory lane, and 5 1/4" image convertions

Perhaps a question I could get by scrounging the net, but on the back on my
IIgs is a modem port. It is circular, 9 pins (I think), and is identical to
the printer port. Is this a serial port? Someone recently suggested that I
get a Super Serial Card, but why would I need one if the IIgs already has a
serial port? It looks identical to ports on the back of my Mac Performa...
Can anyone answer?

I'm so excited to have a working IIgs now! I just got my floppy drives in
today and an old ProDOS 3.5" disk I had from 1990 still booted and my
Applesoft Basic programs (complete with mouse support!) still work! I'm so
proud of myself. ;) And the ProDOS commands have almost come back to me.
Except for all those damn peeks and pokes! I used them throughout my program
(along with a zillion gosubs and gotos)! There's no way I'll ever being able
to trace this. Anyone remember RENUMBER? I should find and run that - in
parts, my code is numbered in 1's - 10, 20, 21, 22, 25, 30, etc. haha!

One last question... Can anyone think of a way to get a 5 1/4" Apple II disk
image to work from a 3.5" disk (since I don't have a 5 1/4" drive and don't
want to buy one if I don't have to)? I have a PC and Mac with 1.44" drives.
I know I can get a 5 1/4" disk image to the Mac, but I'm not sure if I can
de-image it and copy it to a 3.5" disk (800k, of course).
