With no disk in the drive you will always get wildly varying speeds.
When verifying speed, the program writes a reference to the disk then
times how often it comes around. If you can't either read or write
correctly for whatever reason, you'll get wildly fluctuating speed
readings. If you want to see if it's a reading or writing problem on
Drive 2, do the speed test on Drive 1 then start the speed test on drive 2
with no disk in the drive. Then when it's giving those wildly varying
speeds, slip the disk you used to test Drive 1 in Drive 2 and close the
door.
If you're reading allright the drive speed should immediately stabilize.
