It's a 120 ohm resistor that connects the two outermost pins of a 4-pin
phone connector, i.e. the black and yellow lines. Termination is sometimes
strange, if it works without the second one I'd run as is...
I just checked I'm my network is only terminated on one end ( I've got 6
devices )
The transfer rate is pretty much set in software so a serial cable direct
between Mac and GS probably wouldn't speed up transfer. Potential problems
with direct cable include ground loop voltages.
