Digicard Netowrk system for Apple IIGS/Macs?

Is anyone familiar with the old Digicard networks for linking Apple IIGS
to appletalk?

I've now got several of the cards for the IIGS and one of the Digicard
server setups (seems to be a 80 meg scsi drive with a circuit board, amd
power supply inside the box, and two appletalk ports and  two serial
ports on the outside of the box.  It powers up,  the when I take the
drive out and hook it to a mac it shows on the scsi bus.  However the
drive is not readable by the mac, and the device doesn't show on the
appletalk network.  How is it used?  Is some sort of boot disk for the
IIGS needed?
