There is a setting in the control panel for this called "Alternate
Display Mode".  You might try playing with that setting.  You
get to by pressing Command(Apple key), control and Escape keys.
I believe it  has something to do with legacy graphics modes.
I am sure one of the other guys can explain it better but that might
be a place to start.
