I found an Amiga Format '94 issue at home, which reported the C64
was about to be dropped by 1994. Their reason for doing it was the
1541 (and similar) drives had become more expensive to produce than
they could sell it for, and a C64 without a disk drive didn't have
much of a market. The actual computer unit could still be sold for
~$50 with profit claims AF.
