Re: If you could design a $300 homecomputer today, what would you choose?

In article <tl424hfvnqeted@corp.supernews.com>, tthai@mindspring.com

Um, you're using XP... You're whole operating system IS beta.

Anyway, it's the hardware manufacturers job to provide drivers, not the
OS. Any hardware worth having works in linux for the most part.

You don't NEED to recompile linux, some people do because they CAN, with
linux you have that option. With windows you must upgrade or format and
reload to implement new features. I didn't need to recompile linux to
support ICS, but I did need a new copy of windows. I didn't need to
reload linux to support fat32. but I did need to upgrade to rev-b95
windows. Same goes for USB, with windows you had to replace the whole OS
to get that functionality. Firewire, ect, same thing there... you were
saying?

And yes, the biggest reason people use windows is marketing, it comes
with the computer. XP is nice, I'm using it right now (RC1 2505), but
I wouldn't trust it to the extent I trust my Progeny Debian box. Heck I
wouldn't even have it if it wern't for this MSDN subscription (another
thing MS did right).

The only technical superiority Microsoft Windows has over Linux is
the Gaming SDK/DirectX, which is incredibly good. No matter how
much someone likes to bash M$, they still have to agree.

Your/My Win XP doesn't support 64bit, so again here comes an upgrade
and/or format and reinstall. not on my Linux box! Rumor has it XP
doesnt handle 64bit PCI very well either (was looking at that dual
athlon board). In learned MS fashion, we "need a newer version"
