There were various memory expansions available, but there weren't
standards so they weren't so widely supported. But then again, in those
days real men wrote their own software for their own needs.

Quarterdeck's Desqview was the premier DOS multitasker, and based on my
experiences (with one of the last versions) it worked quite nicely. I
think there were others as well, but Desqview was the most famous of
them.
