It's an interface for an optical (greyscale) hand-scanner.
The package consisted of the slot card, driver software
and a common of-the-shelf PC scanner with Omron 1700
scanning head. It was called the "LightingScan GS", not
to be confused with the ThunderScan that plugged into
an ImageWriter printer.
Vitesse had a competing product called the "Quickie";
the only difference was the interface card and software,
otherwise the hand-scanners were interchangeable.
All you need to make use of it is an Omron 1700 based
hand scanner (I vaguely remember Logitech making one)
and Thunderware's IIgs software drivers. It'll allow you to
scan 320x200 in 4-bit greyscale or 640x200 in 2-bit grey-
scale.
