Here's my opinion on it, and I'll keep it short: look at the 8-bit Apple:
we've got free documentation (either PDF, or the zillions of physical ref
mans out there) plus free compilers. Now look at the IIgs: there is some
technical documentation out there (how many GS technical manuals do I own:
zero), but you still have to buy most of it. You need a bookshelf just to
use the toolbox and everything else properly. Most of the compilers and
other tools are still commercial.
