Oh yes, this is all so familiar to me. Don't pay attention to anybody else's
response to this, I'm the only one who knows what he's doing when it comes
to this specific problem. Some people say that PowerMacs won't work. Well,
guess what, some of them do!
There are a few reasons why this isn't working:
First, somewhere around MacOS 8.5 or so, Apple started tacking on resource
forks to every single ProDOS file, no matter if you liked it or not. This
screws up a lot of ProDOS software (ShrinkIt being the most apparent).
Second, I haven't really found any patterns or explanations yet, but the
success rate of creating ProDOS disks on Macs ranges from system to system.
A while ago I collected a short list of configurations that worked and
didn't work:
PowerMac 7100/66 @ 88MHz
DiskCopy: fails
Mac Finder: succeeds
iMac 233 (Bondi rev A) @ 266MHz
DiskCopy: fails
Mac Finder: succeeds
PowerBook 5300c
DiskCopy: succeeds
Mac Finder: succeeds
However, there is one thing that explains this; it seems that Sony floppy
drives are better at writing ProDOS disks than other drives are. Older Mac
models used Sony drives, so that's why so many people believe PowerMacs
won't work (although the above shows differently).
I have a three-step process:
1. Copy all the files from the ProDOS disk to a new folder on the desktop.
2. Erase the disk in the Mac Finder (be sure to select ProDOS 800K).
3. Copy all the files back.
This may or may not actually work, but it's worth every try.
