IIgs woes

My first experience with a IIgs OS disk:
I got some original Apple OS 5 floppies yesterday, and tried to boot one
up. The floppy spins, the status bar gets to about 55% and stops. The drive
light goes off.
Thinking there was something amiss, I took out the floppy and stuck in my
Mac, just to see what happens. While I did so, I noticed the status bar on
the IIgs still crawling inexorably along. Two hours later, it had reached
its zenith. Nothing else happenned. I tried the System Tools disk, and the
status bar didn't even get that far.
Tried another floppy drive. Tried a different IIgs. Same result.
Any advice?
BTW, AppleWorks 5 1/4 disks work fine.
