Re: Apple Disk Drives

> (1) Apple SuperDrive

This is a 1.4M drive for an Apple Mac or a GS with a superdisk controller.
On the standard GS port this drive will only work as an 800K just like the
Apple 3.5. Of course I don't have one of these, but this is what I have
read, someone will correct me if I am wrong.

> (2) Apple 3.5" Drive

This is an 800K drive that will work on a Mac or GS as an 800K drive. It
will also work on a IIe if you have a Universal Disk Controller. It will not
work on a IIc.

> (3) Unidisk 3.5"

This is a 800K drive for the Apple IIc. It will also work on the GS under
System 6 but you need the Unidisk 3.5 driver installed. It won't work on my
UDC Controller at least not in my documentation, although some people have
stated that it will work on some versions of these UDC controllers.

>Any help on what drive is best would be appreciated.

I assume you mean for the GS... I would use the Apple 3.5., the Unidisk 3.5
is too slow because it does the processing inside the drive. If you plan on
getting a IIc, keep the Unidisk 3.5 for that, and if you have a Mac with a
drive port (most older 68K Macs) you could use the Superdisk drive on that.
Not that useful though, because most of those Macs have one built in and a
HDD, and two floppy drives is an overkill. If you ever get lucky enough and
find a superdisk controller for your GS, you can put that superdisk drive on
that and R/W MS-DOS disks, which not many people can do.
