Not really. It supports SLIP and PPP, which are the normal means of
connecting to an ISP via modem. It also supports connection via ethernet
with the LANceGS card.

Exactly so. In fact there are other ways to do it too. You can use
GWFTP, but it has a bug which crashes the GS when you close the ftp
connection. You can also use Arachnid, but you have to give it a full
url to the file you want. (ie it doesn't display directories and let you
choose from them. This isn't a problem with the Trenco site, for
example, since it has web sites listing the files, with ftp links to
download, so you can browse the site and click on the files you want to
download. I'm also in the process of writing an FTP NDA, which will be a
full featured ftp client. (I hope to have this ready for release in the
next few weeks.)

There's other things you can do with an FTP client on the GS too. If you
have a Mac or a PC with ethernet, and run an ftp server on it, you can
then download and upload files from the GS at ethernet speeds (if you
have a LANceGS).

You might find it interesting to check out my software at:

I have my GS connected to the net via a Linux box with IP masquerading,
so I can use the connection for the other machines I have here. Before I
got a LANceGS I used to connect to it via Slip, but now I use Ethernet.
It's a great way to have things set up, and avoids double handling of
stuff. (download to PC or Mac, transfer to GS).
