I wish to clarify a couple points.

Appleshare 2.x runs on a Mac under System 6.x, and requires the Mac be
dedicated to be an appleshare server. Appleshare 3.x runs on a Mac under
System 7.x and is just another task running. The Mac is NOT dedicated to
appleshare but can run other programs too. Perhaps the writer meant that
file serving requires a Mac and can not be done with only apple2's at the
present time.

I can boot my IIGS System 6 from a MacSE, Sys 7.0, running Appleshare 3.0.
(Originaly was IIGS System 6.0, but I upgraded to Sys 6.0.1 a few years
ago. Appleshare was upgraded to v3.0.3 but I didn't notice any change.)
When netbooting, no floppy drive is needed. (A floppy was needed when I
first installed the Appleshare netboot system, but is a luxury accessory
after that ;-) ) I have no experience with Appleshare v2 although I have
that version on my shelf somewhere. I might suspect v2 only works with
GSOS System 5.0.x, but I am not certain. Sys 5.0.4, Sys 6.0, and Sys6.0.1
each required a unique disk for the Mac to setup Appleshare3 booting.

I really enjoy having my IIGS, IIe's, MacLC w/ IIe card networked via
appletalk. I use a MacSE, Sys 7.0.1, for appleshare3 server. I run
Appletalk bridge on a MacPPC 8150 Workgroup server (Sys 8.5) so my II's
can share files with other Macs on the ethernet. Cool :-)

One of my problems: When I boot the IIe's from the appleshare server I
can NOT connect to another Mac on the network. (I can login successfully
it appears but the IIe goes haywire when the login applic quits. The IIGS
and MacLC w/IIe card do not have this problem. I can login to many Macs
concurrently on those machines. IIRC, the IIe can login to more than one
Mac if I boot from a floppy rather than netboot, but I almost always
netboot.

Happy networking!
