I'm using AppleWorks, which has the ability to read DIF files and
create AppleWorks spreadsheet files from them. My question is, how
does AppleWorks find a DIF file on a disk -- that is to say, how does
ProDOS identify a DIF file?
It's just a text file as far as ProDOS knows or cares.

But then, would not the file type be "TXT"?
Sure, that's the external representation of the ProDOS text file.
But there is no file type "suffix" in the Apple world--just a
directory-stored filetype.
I don't know where your DIF file originated or how you are transporting it
to your Apple, but there are several utilities that can set a filetype.
You'll have to choose the text file for Appleworks--it will just take your
word that it's a DIF file, so it had better be one.
