You got to hate it when that happens.

Did you happen to try a different printer cable?  I seem to recall
this happening to me about 10 years ago and I believe I tracked it
down to a bent pin in one end of the cable.  I believe it was one of
the handshaking pins so when the printer told the computer to stop
sending data as its buffer was full, the computer never saw that
signal and just kept sending data overwriting the data in the buffer
creating unpredictable results.
