No Mac model has EVER had the ability to read 5-1/4 floppies unless some 
third-party manufacturer sold a 5-1/4 drive I'm not aware of.  But once 
these files get moved to a ProDOS formatted 3.5, then any Mac with a 
built-in floppy drive (meaning Beige G3 and earlier) should be able to 
read them.  The IIe had the ability to use 3.5 ProDOS drives (I owned 
one), and the IIGS did too (I still have mine).  As for email...if it 
was really a II+ or maybe even a IIe, there's a strong probability they 
won't be able to get to any place where they could send email.  AOL long 
ago stopped supporting those systems (I know, I was a charter member who 
got kicked off after they renamed to AOL and I didn't have a Mac or PC).  
I seem to recall reading recently that the text-based Delphi system is 
also no more.  So an email solution seems rather unlikely.
