Michael,

You hit the nail right on the head--the power brick is indeed bad. I
didn't suspect it because it's the one I use with my //c and it had been
working just fine...that is until today. It too started giving a funky
display. Luckily I have a couple of extra "bricks."

I guess the Laser is more sensitive to the lower voltage on +12 than the
//c. One thing's for sure, the Laser is a beast. I removed the shielding
to have a look-see at the main board--very, very ugly. It looks like
somebody on a bad trip slopped it together. I guess Apple didn't inspire
them much.
