I remember how csa2 has looked for as far back as you want to go. The
main difference between now and a long time ago is that back then there
was hardly anyone here except college students and a few professional
programmers.

Now I don't think it's really contestable that the same
college students who used to form the main readership of this group are
exactly the same people who spent their time in middle/high school cracking
and/or downloading "Warez" from their local BBS.

The way I remember it, this newsgroup starting having a lot of flaming
very soon after Charles Turley appeared, but at that time it didn't have
anything to do with pirating. For a good while before Charles Turley ever
posted a single article here, a lot of the regular posters were aggrieved
because of his (alleged) sector editing.

I don't remember anyone back then being too worried about whether or not he
was copying software. There were a lot of people ticked off at him
because he was (allegedly) sector editing demos, games, and cracks, to
make it look like A) he was the person responsible for the
demo/game/crack or B) he was good friends with the person responsible.

In other words, the main concern back then as far as I remember it was
not that livelihoods were being threatened, but that reputations were
being threatened.
