New Apple IIc

Guys,
    Just boought my first IIc today. Conforming to my new computer ritual, I
opened the case, carefully of course. I am impressed  with the design, it
appears to be very well thought out. But a few things struck me as odd...

On the right side of the computer, there is a metal box, aprox. 3" x 4" in
size. It fits into a 44 pin card edge slot toward the front of the computer.
After thinking about it for awhile, I am still unable to determine what this
might be.

On the left side, underneath the keyboard, there is a 3 row vertical header.
What is it?
