Two main versions of the IIGS had differing amounts of RAM soldered to the
motherboard. You can see when the system boots (the copyright screen) which
IIGS version you have. Likely you have ROM 01, or maybe ROM 3.

ROM 01 has 256 KB of RAM on the motherboard.

ROM 3 (also known as the 1 MB GS) has 1 MB on the board.

However, your IIgs very likely has more than this. By the late 80s, everyone
"should have" had the Apple IIgs memory expansion card, which would boost
those figures to 1.25 MB and 2 MB, respectively.

If you have a ROM 3 with 2 MB RAM (this is my configuration), then you can
do quite a lot. I haven't run into any program that wouldn't run with this
amount, except for Wolfenstein.

As for having a hard drive, I recommend the Focus Drive, which is about $100
fro 16Sector.com
A 128 MB CF card and CF-IDE adapter will together cost you about $10 from
the far-east.
