The * place is called the monitor. It has limited debugging capabilities. By
typing commands you can view memory and stuff like that.

You are getting to the monitor by your software crashing. One thing that can
cause this is not having enough memory for the software being loaded. Try
booting with the shift key held down. This will stop some extra software
from being loaded. If the program now loads, it can mean not enough memory
or one of the extras being loaded being bad.

The rom3 should have enough memory for a good boot.
