In Apple's docs, they are known as extended files and are described in
ProDOS tech note #25 (along with storage type $4, Apple II Pascal area).
Apple II tech notes were available at Apple's ftp site--even long after
the IIe was discontinued, but I cannot find them there anymore. They
are still avalable at a number of non-Apple ftp sites. One is:
