I'm fishing in the dark here, but... there are a few different
chemicals used to make the recordable layer in CD-Rs. Have you tried
different types?

If you look at the bottom (recordable) side, you may see a greenish or
blueish color, or it may be "clear". The reflective surface is usually
silver or gold. The optical properties of the combination may vary a
bit (uh, no pun intended) and in other situations (e.g., commercial CD
or DVD players) sensitivity to the type of disk has been reported.
(Sometimes they find certain combinations that work, sometimes not.)

I'm just wondering (without any testing of my own, mind you) if the
type of disk may be the factor, rather than the format.

How 'bout this idea: take one of the original CD-ROMs that is reliably
readible on the IIgs, and copy it to a CD-R of the type you've been
using with Adaptec's CD Copier Deluxe (part of EZ CD Creator). If the
copy doesn't work, then I would strongly suspect the media is the
problem, not the format.
