Thanks Rubywand & Tom!  Turns out is was the old text/binary thing.  Fetch
(& apparently Interarchy as well) assume that if they can't identify a file
type it must be text.  I just tried one with Fetch set to NOT automatically
assume text and it worked like a charm.
