I still use Beta.... and have you tried replacing the take-up spring
and belt (given that it is a Sony front or top loader)?
One of my Betas went south and I talked to a  bud at a elctroincs store
locally. he suggested that.  and it worked.
BTW he also got me the right chip to fix a cooked Apple Floppy card
once too.
