This is because of a Finder bug. You can send multiple items to the
trash if you hold down the shift key while control-clicking your
selection. I tried to work around this bug in the Finder but wasn't
able to do so. There are problems in the tellFinderSetSelectedIcons
request code handler that result in this behavior.

An extension that causes menus to stay open with one click would
automatically apply to SideClick popups. That's something I've been
thinking about possibly writing, but I have a lot of projects cooking
right now so it would be a while before I got to that one. Anyone else
feel like taking it on? :)
