Re: For Bev (was Re: Piedramar site)

Hi Jeff, I'm a little surprised at your attitude but I guess that's okay.

It is worthless now that it has been pirated on the web. Not caring very much
about older work is simple a matter of the damage already being done. It's a
done deal, and there is nothing I can do about it. I had planned to upload all
of it myself, and in fact had already uploaded quite a bit. (It's down now,
though.)

When others make your decisions for you, some developers go on the warpath,
others sit back and say "enough is enough." I am one of the ones who says that
enough is enough. Up to now, piracy of my work has been relatively minor. This
one was major enough for me to withdraw my current (new in the last 3 years)
work, and to stop doing favors for people.

For example, recently I had a ReportWriter Y2K update for a user outside the
U.S. Getting his proof of ownership, dealing with currency problems (disk and
shipping costs), locating the original of ReportWriter v2.5.2 (for AppleWorks
3.0, an older version I haven't used for 5 years), patching it for Y2K, and
going to the post office during the Christmas rush to send international mail
back to the user, was really more work than I wanted to do. Now, I will no
longer do that work.

I know this is long and boring, but that is my reaction to the piracy issue. I
believe it is quite reasonable, and is what is best for me. Besides, anyone saw
that site could see that others were hit far worse than I. I do not know why I
was singled out for public notification.

I believe it would have been much more sensible for someone to e-mail me rather
than posting it in a public forum. Many people can't seem to grasp that, which
is puzzling. I believe it's just a desire by some for a new dose of browbeating
now that Mr. Turley has (for the most part) gone.

As for reading this board, I would never have seen the "For Bev" thread since
it was a sub-thread of the Piedramar thread. AOL does not show subject changes
(at least to me). I'm still seeing new messages which were written back on the
8th, but which have not appeared until today, the 12th. I expect Mr. Lee's
message will show up sometime around Easter. ;-)
